Retaining Wall Cleaning — Hickory, NC
HydroClean has cleaned more retaining walls than any other single surface — 178+ documented jobs. Block, brick, natural stone, and poured concrete: we know what each material needs.
The Most Commonly Overlooked Surface on Any Property
Retaining walls are everywhere in the Hickory area — every sloped lot, every terraced project. They're also the surface most homeowners neglect, because they're not at eye level. The result: algae, black mold, and efflorescence build up year over year.
We've cleaned more retaining walls than any other single surface type in our history — 178 documented jobs. Block, natural stone, poured concrete, and brick. We know what each material needs.
- ✓Concrete block walls (standard CMU and decorative block)
- ✓Natural stone walls (fieldstone, flagstone, stacked slate)
- ✓Brick and poured concrete walls
- ✓Efflorescence removal — white mineral-salt deposits on masonry
- ✓Red clay staining on concrete and block (NC-specific)
- ✓Moss and lichen removal; cap stones, pillars, and columns
White Staining on Masonry Isn't Mold — It Needs a Different Fix
The white, chalky deposits on block and brick walls are mineral salts that leach through the masonry — not mold. They don't respond to bleach. They respond to the right acidic solution, applied correctly, then rinsed thoroughly. When homeowners try bleach themselves, it doesn't work — which is when they call us.
Block & CMU
Soft-wash or controlled pressure based on block type and condition.
Natural Stone
pH-appropriate chemistry — no acid on limestone or soft stone.
Efflorescence
A dedicated mineral-salt removal process, not a standard pressure wash.
Wall Cleaned Right the First Time
Assessment
We identify the wall material, the type of staining (organic vs. efflorescence vs. clay), and any concerns — cracks, loose stone, damaged mortar.
Pre-Treatment
Appropriate detergent, algaecide, or mineral-acid solution applied based on stain type and material. Dwell time is critical.
Wash
Controlled rinse at appropriate pressure — soft-wash for stone, more for CMU block. We work top to bottom.
Inspection
We walk the wall with you; stubborn spots get retreated on the spot. Conditions that cleaning can't fix (deep moss in cracks, damaged mortar) get flagged.
Red Clay Staining on Walls Is an NC-Specific Problem
Red clay splashback coats the lower courses of retaining walls during rain. On light block and stone it turns the wall a permanent terra-cotta color if left untreated, and standard pressure washing won't lift the iron-oxide staining already set into the surface. We use red-clay-specific chemistry on affected walls — if your wall looks orange-brown at the base, see our red clay removal.
