Why It Looks the Way It Does

What's Growing on Your Driveway — and Why It Keeps Coming Back

Concrete is porous. Water, organic debris, oils, and red clay work their way into the surface and create a food source for mold, algae, and mildew. In the Hickory area's humid climate, the biological growth you see on driveways is the same organism that grows on siding and roofs — it just spreads along the ground instead of up a wall.

A garden hose can't remove it. A consumer pressure washer can blast the surface clean, but leaves streaking and doesn't penetrate deep enough to get the organic matter out of the pores — which is why it comes right back within months.

HydroClean uses a rotary surface cleaner that delivers even pressure across the entire surface with no striping or etching. For oil stains, we use a heated water treatment that emulsifies the oil rather than just pushing it around. Results are dramatically better than DIY pressure washing.

Stain Types We Remove

Every Stain Has the Right Treatment

Not all concrete stains respond to the same approach. Here's how we handle the most common ones in the Hickory area.

⚫

Mold, Algae & Mildew

The most common concrete stain in NC's humid climate. We apply a biodegradable pre-treatment that kills the organism, then surface-clean to remove it. Results last 1–2 years.

🔴

Red Clay & Soil Staining

NC red clay is notorious for staining concrete permanently if left too long. We use targeted pre-treatment and high-pressure extraction to pull clay particles from the pores.

🛢️

Oil & Grease Stains

Requires heated water and a degreasing pre-treatment to emulsify the oil. We can significantly reduce or eliminate most oil stains — though very old, deeply set stains may not fully clear.

🍂

Tannin & Leaf Staining

Oak, walnut, and pine debris leave persistent organic staining on concrete. Pre-treatment followed by surface cleaning removes the staining without damaging the surface.

🧱

Efflorescence (White Deposits)

The white chalky deposits that appear on concrete and brick are mineral salts migrating to the surface. We use appropriate acid-based treatment to dissolve and remove them.

🌿

Moss & Lichen

North-facing or shaded walkways develop green moss and lichen growth. Soft wash solution kills it at the root; surface cleaning removes it completely.

How We Do It

Our Driveway Cleaning Process

Pre-Treatment Application

We apply a biodegradable pre-treatment solution to target organic growth (mold, algae, moss). For oil stains, we apply a heated degreaser and allow it to dwell for several minutes to break down the grease.

Surface Cleaner Pass

Our commercial rotary surface cleaner delivers uniform, even pressure across the entire surface — unlike a wand that leaves stripe patterns. It removes debris and ground-in staining without etching or pitting the concrete.

Targeted Spot Treatment

After the surface cleaner pass, we identify any remaining stained areas and address them with targeted high-pressure treatment or additional chemistry as needed.

Final Rinse & Blow-Off

We rinse the entire surface to remove all residue, blow off standing water, and do a final walkthrough to make sure every section is clean before we leave.

Common Questions

Driveway Cleaning FAQ

Can you remove old oil stains from concrete?
We can significantly reduce most oil stains using our heated water treatment and degreasing chemistry. Very old stains (10+ years) that have deeply penetrated the concrete may not fully clear, but we can typically improve their appearance dramatically. We'll give you an honest assessment when we quote the job — we won't promise results we can't deliver.
Will pressure washing damage my concrete or pavers?
Not when done correctly. We use a rotary surface cleaner rather than a wand, which delivers even, controlled pressure that doesn't etch or stripe the surface. We also adjust pressure based on the surface type — lower pressure for newer concrete, pavers, and soft stone; higher for heavily soiled or older surfaces. In 16 years, we've never damaged a properly poured concrete surface.
How long does a driveway cleaning take?
A standard two-car driveway takes 45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on size and staining. A full-property cleanout including walkways, patio, and pool deck may take 2–4 hours. We'll give you a time estimate with your quote.
How long do results last?
In the Hickory area's humid climate, most driveways stay clean for 1–2 years before mold and algae return noticeably. Properties with heavy tree canopy or in shaded, north-facing orientations may need cleaning annually. Open, sunny driveways often go 2–3 years between cleanings.
Do you seal the driveway after cleaning?
We don't currently offer sealing as part of our standard service, but we recommend waiting 2–4 weeks after cleaning before applying any sealer to allow the concrete to fully dry and off-gas. A quality concrete sealer applied after cleaning can significantly extend the time between cleanings by reducing porosity.
